Jco Review has been in the test preparation industry for a few years now and has helped prepare hundreds of students for the MCAT, OAT and AP exams. They have recently expanded their review courses to include the field of dentistry by launching their own DAT preparation review course.
They have established their own unique and innovative method to teach and prepare students for their respective tests. This method is focused on engaging students on three levels of learning: visual, oral, and literary. They use narrated animations to illustrate how the concepts work.
Their method of teaching is based off of studies that have been done that have shown that students retain six times as much information when taught visually as students who only listen to lectures or read textbooks. They have incorporated all three types of learning into their review course to maximize the learning and retention of their students.
The J Co Review DAT course covers the Survey of Natural Sciences and the Perceptual Ability Test sections of the DAT. As of now they do not have any review material for the Reading Comprehension Test or the Quantitative Reasoning Test.
Their review course consists of short narrated animated videos that range from 1-15 minutes in length with an average of about 5 minutes per video along with notes corresponding to each video. The videos teach concepts, provide tips for different sections, and offer test-taking strategies.
There are about 24 hours in total of videos. Each section such as Biology, for example, is broken down into subsections which are then further broken down to teach specific concepts. Each concept is taught with a short animated video along with notes in PDF format. The notes cover everything that is covered in the videos and also include colored images and graphics for certain concepts.
The material is very thorough and covers everything you need to know for the DAT. The videos although short can seem a little slow at times so it’d be nice if there was the option to play them at a faster speed. The videos are well thought out and to the point; they don’t seem to repeat information or cover anything that is unnecessary for the DAT.
It’s helpful to have the notes as well so that you can read along with what is being taught in the video. The ability to visualize, hear, and read the information that you are studying makes it easier to comprehend and retain it which is great for those that are struggling to learn and retain information from reading textbooks or listening to instructors in a classroom setting.
The PAT portion of the review course also includes tips and test-taking strategies for individual sections. The Angle Ranking, Hole Punching, and Cube Counting sections of the PAT also include practice questions. J Co Review has written algorithms so that the user has a limitless amount of practice questions. Every time you click on the next question, a new question that you haven’t seen before will appear on the fly. No questions are repeated or the same. They are currently working on creating algorithms for more sections of their review course.
Another nice aspect of the review course is that everything is accessible online without any downloads. You can study wherever you have an internet connection. I’ve also been impressed with the promptness and helpfulness by this company. They have a feedback portal on their website where you can receive direct support through their messaging system.
The pricing for their review course is very reasonable for what they offer. You can choose to purchase a subscription for specific sections of the DAT such as: Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or the PAT; or you can purchase their complete DAT review course that contains all of those sections. You can choose any length of subscription that you would like from 1 day to 6 months.
All of their prices for their DAT subscriptions are currently listed at 20% off their regular price!
How to study with JCo Review?
The best way to study with J Co Review is to treat it like a college course.
- Print out the outlines for each section you are studying
- Review each outline before watching the corresponding videos
- Take notes throughout each video if needed
- Review the notes following each section
- Do practice questions for each section you studied
- Review the questions and know why you got any incorrect
- Review the video or your notes again if your scores on a section are deficient and then do more practice questions
Since JCO Review does not have any practice questions, except for the three PAT sections, you should purchase practice questions from an additional source whether that’s Kaplan, The Princeton Review, or another source in order to test your learning.
J Co’s DAT review course is beneficial to many students in that it engages the student in three different styles of learning. It is a great supplemental review course to use, because it can help shed some light on certain concepts that may be difficult to comprehend and make the studying process easier by watching videos instead of reading textbooks or listening to instructors.
The sciences are well covered and can be helpful to your studies. The PAT is pretty decent, but as of now it only has practice questions for three of the six sections. It’s not as useful as the sciences, because I feel that a review course for the PAT out of all the DAT sections is only beneficial with a lot of practice questions that are similar to the DAT in format and difficulty. They are working on getting more practice questions for their review content so they will soon have more practice questions to add to their review course.
This course is well-thought out and prepared, but lacks by not being comprehensive and not having practice questions and full-length practice tests to take. I would consider getting supplemental review materials in addition to this course. I would recommend looking at Kaplan or The Princeton Review for a comprehensive review course which would provide you with practice questions as well as multiple full-length practice tests.
