DatQvault (Rank: #2)

datqvault image

OVERALL RATING: ★★★★

Exam-Identical Software: DatQvault practice exams and simulations are presented in the same computerized format you will see on your test day including the proper time limits, break policies, and rules for moving through the exam content. The practice tests are challenging and are of very similar difficulty level to the actual DAT. They are some of the best practice tests out there on the market.
Study Aids: DatQvault offers excellent study aids for the Biology section of the DAT which will be very beneficial in understanding the material and scoring higher on the actual DAT. They also have some other useful study aids that will be helpful to you.
Score Breakdown: Following each practice test you will receive a breakdown of your scores in every topic on the DAT and an estimated exam score. These detailed analytics will help you to identify which subjects are your strengths and weaknesses and will also show you where you stand against your peers that have taken the test.
No Audio or Video Lectures: DatQvault doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles that the other review courses have like audio and video lectures or physical textbooks. The practice tests and study aids won’t be comprehensive enough to serve as the primary study material so additional review materials are necessary.

Chad’s Videos – CourseSaver (Rank: #4)

OVERALL RATING: ★★★★

Simplicity: Chad is one of the few individuals in this world that possesses the gift of teaching any concept in a clear and concise manner making learning and understanding easy. Prepare to understand concepts that you never did before with Chad’s effective teaching style.
Video Library: The video library is extensive and is made up of short, concise and engaging instructional videos by Chad himself. The videos will keep your attention and you will learn more from them than any other video or review material for the DAT.
Affordable: You have the freedom to choose what topics or subtopics you want to purchase and for how long. This allows you to take charge of your learning and only pay for what you feel is necessary. Subscriptions are affordable on any budget.
Not Comprehensive: Chad’s strength is in both the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry sections of the DAT. The Quantitative Reasoning section is another well-made section that you should consider using, but their review materials for Biology are not complete as of now and there are no review materials for the PAT or Reading Comprehension.

TAKE ME TO CHADS VIDEOS

Gold Standard DAT (Rank: #5)

OVERALL RATING: ★★★★

Simplicity: The Gold Standard is able to present and teach information in a easy to follow and understand manner. They offer thorough explanations about everything and do a good job at stripping down difficult concepts and presenting it in a simple way.
Comprehensive Multimedia Resource: They offer a detailed and thorough review course suited for any type of learner. Their book set is filled with detailed content for every section of the DAT. They also have a video library and MP3 files that covers everything you need to know.
Organic Chemistry: The Organic Chemistry section in The Gold Standard book is slightly weak and does not include any practice questions. They make up for the lack of material and practice questions in the book by providing online practice questions and additional material.
Price: Their review courses are well made, but because of that they are expensive and therefore, are not affordable to every pre-dental student. They are not as expensive as some of the other comprehensive review courses which is a plus however.

Kaplan DAT Review

Kaplan DAT PrepRATING: ★★★★★

The Kaplan DAT Prep Course is one of the most popular review courses on the market today. Kaplan has taken control of the Dental Admission Test review course industry and rightfully so. They offer one of the most comprehensive review courses that I’ve ever seen and provide a number of other hard to beat benefits.

I personally used their course when I took the DAT and benefited greatly from it. I procrastinated way too much in my undergraduate classes and didn’t have a strong science background. Kaplan gave me the foundation that I needed in order to score at a competitive level on all sections of the Dental Admission Test.

I’ll go through some of the different review courses that Kaplan has to offer later on, but first let’s take a look at the major pros and cons.

Pros

1. Exam-Identical Software

The practice exams and simulations are presented in the same exact computerized format you’ll see on your test day, including the proper time limits, break policies and rules for moving through the exam content. This familiarizes you with the Dental Admission Test format and helps build confidence so that you will crush it on your actual exam day.

2. Most Comprehensive Resource

Kaplan claims they have “the most comprehensive resource” for the DAT, and from what I’ve seen, they do. Their Review Notes book with 800+ pages of information covers every topic that will be on the DAT. This book will help you establish a solid foundation for every section of the Dental Admission Test as well as serve as an excellent resource for further understanding.

kaplan dat practice3. Practice Questions

With over 3,500 practice questions and five full length practice tests, you’ll have plenty of problems to solve and become familiar with the format that you’ll see on the actual DAT.

4. Smart Reports

Smart Reports are generated for each practice test you take and help to identify your weakest areas and how to best adjust your preparation in order to improve your scores. They analyze each section of the test by question type and provide a comprehensive performance analysis. They’ll also recommend specific assignments that you should do in order to master the content and improve your scores. Your performance will continue to be assessed as you continue your preparation.

5. Free Full-Length DAT Practice Test

You can enroll online to take a free full-length DAT practice test. I’d recommend taking this free test before you begin your studies so that you can see how well you do and identify what areas you need to improve in. Most likely you’ll have to improve in every area, but you can at least take the free practice test to have a baseline that you can compare against.

6. Variety of Learning Styles

With a variety of courses available, Kaplan makes it possible for any type of learner to receive instruction in the way that serves them best; whether that’s working alone, attending a class, or working with a private tutor.

7. Accessibility

All of the material except the Lesson Book, Review Notes book and flashcards will be accessible through Kaplan’s website (the books and flashcards are hard copies that are mailed to you). It’s not necessary to download any software in order to use Kaplan, which means that you’ll have easy access to your review course anywhere that there’s the Internet. You will have access to all of your online content for 120 days from your start date.

8. Money-Back Guarantee

Kaplan is one of the only companies that offers a money-back guarantee. Here are their conditions:

  • If you feel you’re not ready to take the exam, you can study with them again for free for the next test date or for three more months for computer-based tests.
  • No matter how many points you improve, if you’re not satisfied with your overall score, you can study with them again for free for the next test date or for three more months for computer-based tests.
  • If for any reason you don’t raise your overall score, you can study with them again for free or get your money back.

Here are the eligibility requirements that are necessary to meet in order to receive the money back guarantee:

Step 1: You are a first-time Kaplan student and enroll in a High Score Guaranteed eligible program which has been paid in full.

Step 2: You complete that program and take the official test when it is next administered.

Step 3: Within three months of completing that program, you share your official score with Kaplan and tell them whether you want to repeat the same program one more time for free OR if you didn’t score higher on the official test, you want your money back instead.

9. Customer Service

Out of all of the DAT preparation companies that I have dealt with, Kaplan has some of the best customer service. They’ve always been respectful, punctual and understanding when I’ve dealt with them. The quality of customer service is a reflection of the company and its product as a whole in my opinion. I’d be reassured that a quality company like this will give you a quality product that you can trust.

10. Discounts

Kaplan has created an exclusive deal for Crush the DAT readers. Get $200 OFF any Kaplan DAT course Show Coupon Code.

Cons

1. Errors

There are proofing errors throughout the Kaplan material. Every once in awhile there might be a question that has an incorrect answer response for the correct answer or has a mistake in the question itself. However, I don’t consider these errors numerous or substantial enough to make a difference in your preparation. Almost every other DAT review material on the market today has proofing errors.

2. Supplemental Study Material May Be Needed

Kaplan can provide you with a solid foundation for the Dental Admission Test and can help you to achieve 20+ scores on all sections of the DAT, however, I feel that there are other resources out there that would be more beneficial at taking your scores to the next level once you have an established foundation of knowledge. I found Kaplan’s full-length practice tests to be relatively similar or slightly easier to the actual DAT on a difficulty level.

My actual DAT scores were the same or lower to the scores I was receiving on the Kaplan practice tests. I think Kaplan does a great job at preparing you for the DAT with their materials, however,  if you use some supplemental study materials in addition to Kaplan’s DAT review course then you will definitely have a huge edge against your peers.

My Suggestion

The Kaplan DAT Course is one of the only review courses available that’ll give you an all-around solid foundation for the DAT. There are some specialized courses that do a better job at teaching certain sections of the DAT, but they aren’t comprehensive courses that cover everything on the DAT like Kaplan.

Although it’s expensive, the amount of quality study material and value that you get with Kaplan outweighs the cost.

Kaplan is great for any pre-dental student, whether you haven’t taken a college course in 10 years, or if you have a very strong science background and are just looking to familiarize yourself with DAT questions and the exam format.

Depending upon your style of learning, Kaplan can meet your needs with the variety of review courses it offers, however, I feel that there is one Kaplan course that is the best choice for all pre-dental students.

What Is The Best Kaplan DAT Course?

My choice would be the DAT Advantage – On Demand course and I would recommend it to anyone looking to use one of Kaplan’s courses. It provides you with everything that you would get from their other packages and is the most affordable.

The Review Notes book, numerous quizzes, section tests and full-length tests that you’ll have access to will be vital to your preparation. They’ll help you establish a foundation and familiarity for each section of the DAT and serve as a resource to look to for further understanding and knowledge.

The only downside is for people who prefer learning in a live classroom environment, since this package doesn’t offer live instruction. I prefer learning with an instructor in-person, which is why I enrolled in the on-site Kaplan course. I found that I got very little extra information out of these sessions and would have been just as prepared had I not attended them.

The instructors might have some of their own tips and tricks that they’ll share with you in the live sessions, which could be helpful, however, the Kaplan tips and tricks for the DAT are all included in the lesson book that comes with any of the packages. It’s not necessary to pay extra for an instructor when you have the same information available to you in the resources you’ll be given anyway.

Kaplan DAT Course Options

Kaplan offers a variety of different review courses to meet the needs and learning styles of all the different types of pre-dental students. Here’s a list of these courses from least to most expensive and what they include:

Kaplan DAT Book ($50):

This best-selling paperback review guide on Amazon provides targeted training and preparation for students in order to maximize their Dental Admissions Test score. This book contains the following:

  • Science and Quantitative Review
  • Exercises and the most up-to-date questions for the Perceptual Ability Test
  • 1 Reading Comprehension practice test
  • Effective test strategies to maximize your score
  • Vivid color instructional charts and diagrams along with a 16-page pullout study sheet section
  • 2 full length DAT practice tests with answer explanations

You also have access to the following features from Kaplan with this review guide:

  • Free access to an additional full length practice test and extra science mini-quizzes online
  • A full refund from Kaplan to customers who do not increase their test scores after using this book

This review guide can be helpful, but it will not provide as many practice questions, tests and features that the Kaplan review courses provide. This is for someone that prefers studying alone without any instruction or support from an instructor. This review guide can be purchased here.

DAT Organic Edge ($500):

An online course that gives you access to eight lessons covering basic concepts in Organic Chemistry. This course gives you access to the material for three months only.

This is for someone that hasn’t taken Organic Chemistry in a few years and needs a lot of help with it. I wouldn’t recommend this review course due to how expensive it is and I would suggest looking at Chad’s Videos for your Chemistry review material.

DAT Advantage – On Demand ($1,250):

An online course that gives you access to:

  • 11 recorded instruction videos
  • Over 130 hours of practice and instruction

The amount of time and prices for working with a private tutor are as follows:

Hours Price
 15 $2,800
 25  $3,900
 35  $5,000

Private tutoring with an instructor that will provide you with:

  • 11 live, scheduled sessions of comprehensive instruction

This course allows you to go at your own pace and set your own schedule. It provides you with live instruction and direct support from a private tutor. This is for the person that prefers learning directly from an instructor, but in a private setting rather than in the classroom.

These review courses range from $50-$5,000 in price and while they are not cheap, they provide you with different methods of learning to meet your needs.

DatQvault Review

datqvaultRATING: ★★★★

DatQvault was the first company to offer online test prep material for the DAT and remains one of the leaders in review materials for the exam. They offer a number of challenging practice tests with beneficial study aids to help students efficiently prepare for the exam. DatQvault also breaks down your tests scores and provides you with useful statistics to help you improve constantly throughout your studies.

DatQvault Overview

The DatQvault website has a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to navigate and find the information that you need. Their web-based review material makes studying easier, as you can access your practice tests wherever you have an internet connection. Explore the website to get a feel for what they have to offer and make sure to take their free Biology practice test.

DatQvault offers 10 practice tests per subject on the DAT, except for the Reading Comprehension section, which has only 7 practice tests. Each practice test has been created to simulate the actual DAT in format as well as difficulty. This means that each practice test has the same number of questions, the same format, and the same level of difficulty as the actual DAT so that you can gauge how well you will score on the exam based off of your DAT Q Vault practice tests.

Practice Test Analytics

You’ll receive a detailed score report of your results following each practice test that you take. The reports include your estimated exam score, percentile compared to all other users that have taken the test, and your number correct of answers. You’ll receive a breakdown of how well you performed on each topic within a subject so that you know in which areas you are proficient and in which areas you need more work. You’ll be able to target the areas in which you are deficient and focus on these sections to increase your overall score. With this feature, you will always know where you stand and how to improve.

Along with an analysis and breakdown of your score for each test, you are also provided with detailed explanations for each question. This will help you understand why you got an answer wrong and learn from these explanations. This is an excellent resource to use when taking practice tests – make sure to check all of your answers with the explanations and understand the material you were tested on to score higher on the actual DAT.

Once you know what topics you need additional practice in, then you can practice those specific topics with DatQvault’s unique feature that allows you to take practice questions by topic. You can also click on Difficulty to see how the questions in each topic rate in difficulty on the actual DAT. Another useful feature is the Proficiency feature that allows you to see how well you score in each subject. You will start seeing Proficiency as soon as you take a test, or practice questions by topic.

DatQvault also has useful study aids for the Biology and Angle Ranking sections of the PAT. These study aids, especially for Biology, are helpful to truly understand the material. Be sure to make use of these and you’ll definitely perform better on these sections.

Pricing

You’ll receive instant access to review material upon completing your purchase, allowing you to start your studies right away. You can purchase practice tests for individual subjects or for a discounted rate. For additional time on your subscription, you can purchase a complete package of practice tests covering all subjects of the DAT.

Individual subjects can be bought for $60 and expire 90 days after the purchase date. Their complete DAT package includes all 6 subjects and can be purchased for a discount of 33% off the retail value. The complete package also includes a 10 day bonus is added on to the subscription allowing you to use the materials for 100 days.

If you would like to extend your subscriptions, then you can extend individual subjects for $20, which allows you a 30 day extension on your subscription. If you extend all subjects, then you receive the same 33% discount off the retail value and a 5 day bonus is added onto the extension – this allows you to use the materials for an additional 35 days.

DatQvault offers a full refund if you have not yet used any of the materials. They have excellent customer service and are attentive to your needs, so feel free to reach out to them if you have any questions while using their study materials.

My Suggestion

DatQvault is an excellent online-based test preparation company and provides quality review materials to help you do well on the DAT. They offer plenty of practice tests for each section of the DAT to give you enough practice to prepare you for the actual Dental Admission Test. Their exams are some of the most similar to the actual DAT in terms of format and difficulty.

The Biology section is golden, as it is more difficult in comparison to the actual DAT. Use the study aids, take all of the practice tests and you will definitely be prepared for this section. The remaining sections are all very similar to the actual DAT. Most students typically score the same, or within a point or two, on their practice tests as the actual DAT. Their Biology section typically has the largest discrepancy, as most students score several points higher on the actual DAT than the Biology practice tests.

I would suggest using the DatQvault practice tests to assess your knowledge on each section of the DAT to see where you need to focus your studies to improve your scores. Overall, DatQvault provides the practice tests and tools necessary to help you to CRUSH the DAT!

The Princeton Review DAT Course

Rating: ★★★★

The Princeton Review was founded in 1981 and has been a long time leader in the test-preparation services industry. They’ve helped thousands of college students achieve their higher-education goals through their services. Their comprehensive DAT preparation courses provide you with everything you need to prepare for the DAT and be satisfied with your scores – they guarantee it.

The Princeton Review has been a long time frontrunner in the DAT preparation industry. Although they may be overlooked at times, they’ve revamped their review courses over the last year and they’re top notch and deserve a serious look when deciding what DAT prep materials to use.

Pros

1. Exam-Identical Software

The practice exams and simulations are presented in the same computerized format you’ll see on your test day including the proper time limits, break policies and rules for moving through the exam content. This familiarizes you with the Dental Admission Test format and helps build your confidence so you will crush it on your actual exam day.

2. Comprehensive Resource

The Cracking the DAT textbook with 880+ pages of information covers every topic that will be on the DAT. This book will help you establish a solid foundation for every section of the Dental Admission Test as well as serve as a resource to look to for understanding. These materials will serve you well in your studies.

3. Practice Questions

With hundreds of questions and four full-length practice tests, you’ll have plenty of problems to solve and become familiar with the format that you’ll see on the actual DAT. I like how they include several practice questions following every section of review content in the Cracking the DAT book so that you can check your understanding after reviewing the material. They also include solutions to every practice question, which is crucial for learning and understanding.

4. Analysis Reports

Analysis Reports are generated for each practice test you take and help to identify your weakest areas and how to best adjust your preparation in order to improve your scores. They analyze each section of the test by question type and provide a comprehensive performance analysis. They are very detailed and even offer specific advice tailored to your results. They’ll also advise you on what areas to study and focus on based on your results.

5. Attention to Detail

What really impresses me about The Princeton Review is their attention to detail. They offer thorough explanations in all subjects so that you are never left in the dark. They provide explanations about the DAT, including a general overview, scoring information and information about dental schools. You’ll always know what to expect and how to prepare for it.

Princeton Review even offers advice on what to do in certain sections when you get stumped or are unsure. There are syllabi for each subject, which lists what to do before class, the goals for the class period, the in-class activities, what homework should be done after class and what is needed for next time. They’re very well structured and organized. They’ve thought of everything and have prepared a thorough and effective comprehensive review course.

6. Strategies

There are effective test-taking strategies for every section of the DAT in Cracking the DAT. They offer multiple strategies for each section so that you can find a strategy that works for you.

7. Reference Guide

There’s a 16-page reference guide at the conclusion of Cracking the DAT that’s a great condensed resource to study from, whether you’re on the go or want a quick refresher. The guide contains the most important formulas, diagrams, information and concepts for each section of the DAT.

8. Perceptual Ability Manipulatives

By purchasing any of their review course packages you’ll receive materials to help you enhance your skills for the Perceptual Ability Test. These hands-on materials can be manipulated to visualize and practice for the Angle Discrimination (Angle Ranking), Paper Folding (Hole Punches), Cube Counting and 3D Form Development (Pattern Folding) sections of the Perceptual Ability Test. There’s also additional worksheets and materials online in the Student Portal for students to gain additional practice with for the PAT as well as other sections of the DAT.

9. The Princeton Review Promise

The Princeton Review Promise includes three guarantees:

  1. Readiness Guarantee: If at the end of your course, you do not feel ready to take your test, you may continue to work with them for up to a year.
  2. Satisfaction Guarantee: If at the end of your course, you are not satisfied, regardless of how much your score improves, then you can continue to work with them for up to a year.
  3. Money Back Guarantee: If your score does not improve after taking the course, you may receive a tuition refund.

Each eligible student may only choose one of the guarantee offers applicable to their program. You must attend all program sessions, take all assigned tests and complete all of your homework in order to qualify for their guarantees.

The Readiness Guarantee is not available for private tutoring programs, whether in-person or online, or self-paced online courses. LiveOnline students are required to mail in all homework in order to demonstrate they’ve completed all of their homework. You will not be provided with new materials unless there has been a material version change.

The Satisfaction Guarantee is not available for private tutoring programs other than comprehensive tutoring programs (minimum of 30 hours) or subject tutoring programs.

The Money Back Guarantee is available to anyone taking a DAT course, except for self-paced Online, subject tutoring or tutoring for less than 30 hours in the Comprehensive Private Tutoring Program, and your test score does not improve, then you are eligible for a full refund.

10. Free Full-Length DAT Practice Test

You can enroll online to take a full-length DAT practice test for free. I’d recommend doing it before you’ve begun your studies so that you can see how well you do and identify what areas you’ll need to improve. Most likely you’ll have to improve in every area, but you can at least take the free practice test to have a baseline that you can compare against.

11. Variety of Learning Styles

With a variety of courses available, The Princeton Review makes it possible for any type of learner to receive instruction in the way that serves them best; whether that’s working alone, attending a class in-person or online, or working with a private tutor.

12. Accessibility

All of the material except Cracking the DAT, the Workbook, the In-Class Compendium and the PAT manipulatives are available online – the books and PAT manipulatives will be mailed to you. It’s not necessary to download any software in order to access the content online which means that you have easy access to your review course anywhere there’s Internet.

13. Customer Service

Out of all of the DAT preparation companies that I have dealt with they have some of the best customer service. They have always been respectful, punctual and understanding when I have dealt with them. The quality of customer service is a reflection of the company and its product as a whole in my opinion. I’d be reassured that a quality company like this will give you a quality product that you can trust.

Cons

1. Supplemental Study Material May Be Needed

The Princeton Review can provide you with a solid foundation for the Dental Admission Test and can help you to achieve 20+ scores on all sections of the DAT; however, supplemental practice questions and practice tests are always helpful and the extra practice could help make you more well-rounded and better prepared for the DAT.

2. Limited Availability for Live Courses

Live in-person courses offered by The Princeton Review are very limited in where they offer. You can check online to see where the closest available courses are to you. Their live courses might not be as accessible to everyone, but they still have exceptional online courses that are available to anyone anywhere.

My Suggestion

I would highly recommend Princeton Review’s Ultimate Live Online Course to anyone who is serious about scoring high on the DAT. It provides you with everything that you would get from their other packages and it is more affordable than most. The textbooks, practice questions and full-length tests that you’ll have access to will be vital to your preparation. They’ll help you establish a foundation and familiarity for each section of the DAT and serve as a resource to look to for further understanding and knowledge.

They offer the most thorough and detailed comprehensive review course that I have seen. It is obvious they put in the time to cover all the bases when it comes to preparing for the DAT. They have a very well-structured and organized course along with the exceptional instruction by their highly trained subject experts. Their newly revamped DAT review courses are definitely one to consider and although they’re not cheap I feel that any diligent student will be successful in achieving their goals for the DAT with one of their courses.

Chad’s Videos DAT Review

Chad's Videos DAT Review

RATING: ★★★★

Chad’s Videos, also known as CourseSaver, is a top-notch DAT review course for pre-dental students. The instructors, Chad and Alan, have been using their video review courses to teach pre-health students for over 12 years. This longevity and experience really sets them apart from their competitors.

Simply put, their course is one of the best teaching tools on the market today. It is hard to find anything negative to say about CourseSaver – they have a well-thought-out and thorough review course that will help any pre-dental student increase their scores on the Dental Admission Test.

Overview

course saver mobile imageCourseSaver offers a review course that includes a video library known as Chad’s Videos, outlines for each section and quizzes. Though not a comprehensive review source, it does cover the important sections in their entirety and others partially. I will go through each test and explain what is covered by Chad’s Videos.

Chad’s Videos is an instructional video library where the namesake expert teaches the material for the DAT to a group of pre-health students. It is a clear and concise video library that makes learning the material easy – you feel like you’re in the classroom.

Videos allow you to hear Chad explain the concepts in length – for many, this is preferable to reading a textbook and learning without any guidance. The videos can be played at two different speeds, fast or normal, which allows the viewer to skim the material or spend more time learning the concepts.

CourseSaver also offers 40+ free DAT videos and hundreds of other free videos so that you can preview the material and expand the breadth of your learning. I would recommend checking out the free videos before purchasing them to see if it’s something that would benefit you.

Chad’s Videos, along with the additional outlines and quizzes, provide great review material for the DAT. The General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry sections are the standouts of Chad’s Videos, and, in my opinion, are the best review sources on the market. The Biology and other three tests of the DAT have some material to review, but they are not complete or as good as review sources as the two Chemistry sections.

Let’s go over the material that Course Saver offers and see if it can help you.

Biology

  • Outlines: Overviews of each lesson are available to download. Review the outlines for each lesson so you know what will be covered. Take notes on and use them to review material after completing each section.
  • Videos: The videos in this section are not complete, but they are available for no charge. They could be helpful, but I would recommend using a different resource like Kaplan to provide you with a more comprehensive review of Biology.
  • Alan’s Notes: These are key Biology terms and definitions that Alan has put together. These are good terms to know for this section and can be helpful to have while studying.
  • Quizzes: These contain over 400 questions available to test your knowledge.

chads videos scienceGeneral Chemistry

This section, along with the Organic Chemistry section, is the main reason why you should study with Chad’s Videos. If chemistry isn’t your forte then you will probably experience numerous ‘ah-ha’ moments while Chad reviews material that you never understood fully before, but now do thanks to Chad. He has a way of explaining concepts in a manner that is simple and makes the most frustrating and difficult concepts easy to understand.

  • Outlines: Outlines of each lesson are available to download. Review these for each lesson so you know what will be covered. Take notes on the outlines and use them to review material after completing each section.
  • Videos: The videos in this section are awesome. It is worth every penny to use these videos for your General Chemistry preparation. Unless you’re scoring near perfect scores on your practice tests, I believe that you will find these videos to be incredibly valuable.
  • Quizzes: These contain over 300 questions to test your knowledge.

Organic Chemistry

This section is the other standout section of Chad’s Videos. In my opinion, it is the best Organic Chemistry review source on the market today.

  • Outlines: Overviews of each lesson are available to download. Review these for each lesson so you know what will be covered. Take notes on the outlines and use them to review material after completing each section.
  • Summary of Reactions: These contain a summary of all the reactions you should know for this section.
  • Videos: The videos in this section are awesome. It is worth every penny to use these videos for your Organic Chemistry preparation. Unless you’re scoring near perfect scores on your practice tests, I believe that you can get something out of these videos and they will help your scores to improve.
  • Quizzes: These contain more than 200 questions to test your knowledge.

Perceptual Ability Test

The only part of the PAT that is covered by CourseSaver is the Angle Discrimination (Angle Ranking) subtest, however, there are plenty of questions available to practice this subtest. I would definitely use another resource such as Kaplan or Crack DAT PAT for the rest of the subtests of this test.

  • Quizzes: Over 1,100 questions available to purchase and test your knowledge.

Reading Comprehension

There is one incomplete sample for this test as of now. Try looking at Kaplan or another resource to get practice on this test.

Quantitative Reasoning

The quizzes for this test cover a lot of the material on the exam, however, not everything. It is a good foundation, but additional review sources are recommended.

Additional Resources

Waxing Videos

These instructional videos cover basic information on waxing and provide you with some examples to see how to wax up a tooth. They can be beneficial in helping you to begin developing these skills for dental school, but I don’t think this is necessary to have practiced beforehand. It could give you an edge against your classmates, but don’t feel pressured to practice waxing before beginning dental school.

NBDE Review Courses

CourseSaver has quizzes for both the NBDE Part 1 and NBDE Part 2 Board Exams. There are almost 6,000 questions for the NBDE Part 1 Exam and roughly 1,000 questions for the NBDE Part 2 Exam. These can be helpful and will provide some additional practice while preparing for boards.

College Review Courses

Course Saver also offers review courses with outlines, videos, and quizzes for the following courses: General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics and Biochemistry. These can be very helpful to anyone trying to get by these courses with the best grades possible. Maintaining both a high overall GPA and high Science GPA is crucial for getting accepted into dental school. If you are struggling with any of these courses in your undergraduate career, then consider getting these review courses to help you earn a high grade and keep your GPA up.

How to study with Chad’s Videos?

The best way to study with Chad’s Videos is to treat this review course like a college course.

  • Print out the outlines for each section you are studying
  • Review each outline before watching the videos for that section
  • Take notes throughout each video
  • Review notes following each section
  • Do practice questions for each section you studied
  • Review the questions and learn why you got any incorrect
  • Review the video or your notes again if your scores on a section are deficient, and then do more practice questions

I would recommend doing some of the quizzes that you can purchase through Course Saver for practice questions – you could also use additional resources.

My Suggestion

I would highly recommend using Chad’s Videos for your Chemistry sections, as I feel there is no better review source on the market for Chemistry. Chad’s Videos will give you a great foundation for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, but you need to do lots of practice questions to make sure you solidify that foundation and can take your scores to the next level.

I would look at getting supplemental review materials in addition to these videos. I would recommend looking at Kaplan or The Princeton Review for a comprehensive review course which would provide you with additional practice questions as well as multiple full-length practice tests.

Free Trial

CourseSaver now offers a 1 week free trial to all new members on their site. Take advantage of this amazing opportunity to experience all that they have to offer before even making a purchase!

Support

CourseSaver has some unique features that make it more useful to pre-dental students than other review sources on the market. They have a forums section on their website to post questions and get support from other users, or even Chad or Alan. They also have a chat feature which enables you to interact with other users as well.

They have great customer support; every time I’ve needed to contact them via email they have responded in a very timely manner.

Course Saver Coupon Code and Discount

You can’t beat the prices for the quality of the review material on CourseSaver. In my opinion this is the best material for the best prices. All purchases are non-refundable. You can purchase the material for a period of 30 days. After the 30 days if you do not cancel your subscription then you will be automatically subscribed to another 30 days. You may cancel at any point and receive a partial discount at that point if you have not finished your 30 day subscription. For example, if you used the videos for 45 days then you would be charged for two 30 day subscriptions and then upon canceling on day 45 you would receive a partial discount for the remaining 15 days of your second subscription.

You may purchase individual sections of a test instead of having to purchase everything (i.e., You can purchase just the General Chemistry section instead of purchasing the full review course).

This is another great feature of CourseSaver. They know that you might not need to review everything in a section, so they give you the option to only buy what you need instead of having to purchase one complete package like other review sources on the market.

We have arranged an exclusive discount with Course Saver for our readers only. Any new user to Course Saver will automatically receive a 15% discount off their entire purchase.

Accessibility

You can access your material on CourseSaver anywhere that you have internet access. They also have a desktop app which enables you to download Chad’s Videos with internet access and then load them on to an iPad, Android, Mac or PC device to view later even without internet access.

I know I have been raving non-stop about Chad’s Videos, but it is really difficult to find anything negative to say. I know it seems too good to be true, but I’ve tried it out and have seen or known of countless other individuals that benefited greatly from using this product.

I studied with some of the videos and found myself understanding things I had never understood before. I felt more confident in Chemistry and finally had a more solid foundation in order to score better in it.

Don’t be foolish and think by just watching the videos you will have this miraculous change where you all of a sudden score in the high 20’s on the Chemistry sections. You need to work at it, but Chad’s Videos, I believe, are the right materials that can give you what you need in order to take your scores to a higher level.

There are other great resources as well, but this is one I would put at the top of the list and definitely consider. If you have any questions or comments then feel free to share them below!

DAT Cracker Review

RATING:

DAT Cracker is a relatively new web-based DAT prep company that has been gaining some recognition in the pre-dental field. They offer an affordable DAT review package that is made up of multiple practice tests for every section of the DAT.

Their subscription can be paid for on any pre-dental budget which is why they are definitely a company to consider when deciding on what materials you should use to prepare for the DAT.

Overview

DAT Cracker has a very friendly user interface allowing you to easily navigate around the website and find the information that you are looking for. They offer free diagnostic tests for each section on the DAT which all you have to do in order to access is to register on their site. I’d highly suggest taking some of the free diagnostic tests to get a feel for their material before purchasing a membership with them.

DAT Cracker offers only one option of materials available for purchase. It includes several practice tests for every section of the DAT and adds up to be 45 practice tests in total. Here is the breakdown of how many practice tests they offer for each section:

  • Biology: 4 tests
  • General Chemistry: 4 tests
  • Organic Chemistry: 4 tests
  • PAT (Keyholes): 4 tests
  • PAT (Top-Front-End): 4 tests
  • PAT (Angle Ranking): 5 tests
  • PAT (Hole Punching): 4 tests
  • PAT (Cube Counting): 5 tests
  • PAT (Pattern Folding): 3 tests
  • Reading Comprehension: 3 tests
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 5 tests

There are also randomized tests that you can take as a new option for every single section listed above, except for PAT (Pattern Folding) and Reading Comprehension. They are currently offering a promotional rate for their materials which is half off of its original price. You can save even more money by using our exclusive CRUSH the DAT discount to save an extra $10 off of your purchase. Once you click on one of our links to purchase a membership with DAT Cracker you will automatically receive $10 off your purchase.

Following each test you take you will receive a score report via e-mail that will provide you with an estimated score for that test. It will also help you to identify your weak areas so that you can focus on improving them. Your scores can also be submitted to their leaderboard so that you can compare your scores with other users to see where you stand. Detailed explanations are provided for each question on the tests so that you can learn from them. They are helpful, but there are some explanations that are slightly vague and not as detailed as they could be. They are still helpful though to try and understand the concept being tested on in the question.

After purchasing a subscription with DAT Cracker you will have 5 months of unlimited access to the materials. The nice thing about it is that you only need an internet connection to access the materials; no downloads are necessary. You can take the tests as many times as you want in that 5 month period. You are also entitled to receive free updates to the materials.

DAT Cracker also has a blog where they post advice and information about topics related to the DAT or dental school. You can receive customer support from them any day of the year with their 24 hour 7 days a week customer service. They are great at customer support and addressing your needs or concerns and always respond within a 24 hour period.

DAT Cracker has partnered up with DAT Cram Cards, a mobile app for iPhone/iPad and Android devices. This app contains flashcards for several sections of the DAT, the sections are: Biology, General Chemistry, and Quantitative Reasoning. They have over 2,200 flashcards for Biology, 680 flashcards for General Chemistry, and 180 flashcards for Quantitative Reasoning.

You can track your progress with the app to see how you are improving over time in your studies. It’s easy to use, like DAT Cracker, and the illustrations and images that they have help to understand difficult concepts. You are able to mark the cards so that you can focus on concepts that you do not understand well and need more practice on and also to skip the cards containing concepts that you already know. You can search through the cards by keyword to find concepts that you want to study more. You’ll receive free unlimited updates to the apps and can contact DAT Cram Cards through the app if you have any issues or questions.

The nice thing about DAT Cram Cards is that they offer a guarantee with purchase of their apps. If you don’t score at least a 16 or higher on the section that you studied with DAT Cram Cards then they will refund you your money times two back to you. That’s not a bad guarantee, but you should be able to score at least a 16 on these sections regardless of whether you studied with their app or from another DAT review material.

My Suggestion

DAT Cracker is an affordable and relatively useful tool to use for preparing for the DAT. The practice tests are fairly similar to the actual DAT in format and in difficulty. There are several sections that are slightly easier than the actual DAT, but overall they do a fairly good job at representing the DAT. It is one of the cheapest subscriptions of DAT practice tests on the market and with the CRUSH discount it is even cheaper. I would like to see full-length practice tests offered instead of individual tests for each section so that you can really get the feel of the actual DAT, but you can still get good experience and practice with these individual section tests that they offer.

The answer explanations are decent and can be helpful to understanding the material better, but you will definitely need good comprehensive review materials to use with these practice tests. Their practice tests will be helpful in assessing how you are doing in your studies, but you will not be able to learn and understand as much from them as you would an actual review source. You should purchase a comprehensive review source to really learn and understand the material and DAT Cracker will serve as a source of extra practice questions and tests in order to be prepared for the DAT. The more practice questions you do the better so DAT Cracker makes it easier to access more practice questions and gain more experience by offering an affordable membership.

Barron’s AP Biology Review

Rating:

Barron’s AP Biology book is a review guide for students preparing for the AP Biology exam. However, this review guide is an excellent prep material for the Biology section of the DAT. It is similar to CliffsNotes AP Biology and is not intended to replace a more thorough Biology source such as a textbook like Campbell Biology. It is condensed and succinct so that you only read and study what you need to know.

 Overview

This is a review book for the AP Biology Exam, therefore not all the information in it is pertinent to the DAT. It is fairly detailed for a review guide, but still is not as thorough as a textbook so don’t expect to find everything about Biology within its pages. You may need supplemental materials for certain subjects, but this review guide does cover all the necessary topics in Biology for the DAT.

Here is an overview of the review guide:

Table of Contents

  • Barron’s Essential 5

  • Biochemistry
  • The Cell
  • Cell Respiration
  • Photosynthesis
  • Cell Division
  • Heredity

  • Model Test 2

Appendix A–Bibliography
Appendix B–Measurements Used in Biology
Appendix C–Reference Tables
Glossary
Index

This study guide contains two practice tests as well as the option to purchase a CD-ROM for an additional two more computer based practice tests. The CD-ROM includes automatic scoring for the practice tests and both the book and the CD-ROM contain answer explanations for each question. They also offer an additional online bonus practice test for purchasing the book alone or with the CD-ROM. If you purchase the CD-ROM as well then you will have a total of 5 practice tests. There are also additional multiple-choice and free-response practice questions with answer explanations throughout the book at the end of each chapter.

My Suggestion

Barron’s AP Biology is a great review guide to help you prepare for the Biology section of the DAT. It is cheap, affordable, but also well-written so I would suggest it as a material to use for studying Biology. There are a few errors including grammatical and informative errors which seems to be a common trend in all Barron’s review books, but it is not nearly as error-littered as the Barron’s DAT review guide.

There is quite a bit of material about Biology for a review guide. It contains more content, illustrations, and practice questions than CliffsNotes AP Biology. It is easier to read and study from than CliffsNotes as well. It seems more like a children’s book with all the illustrations, whereas CliffsNotes is more like an encyclopedia that just states the facts. Some answer explanations are slightly vague and it may be difficult to understand why an answer is correct, therefore, a supplemental review source could be helpful to explain more when Barron’s does not.

The strengths of Barron’s that most students find helpful for the DAT is that it is easier to read, more in-depth, and has better review material on Plants and Taxonomy than CliffsNotes. Most students prefer CliffsNotes over Barron’s if you have to pick between the two, but I would suggest using them both together. I would study mainly from CliffsNotes, but would also do all of the practice tests and questions in Barron’s as well along the way and study from Barron’s when you need a more in-depth look at something.

Also, you should use Barron’s for the Plants and Taxonomy sections instead of CliffsNotes as these sections are better explained in Barron’s. That way you will fill in all the gaps of information that you need to know for the DAT Biology section. They are both affordable review guides to purchase and both complement each other to adequately prepare you for the test.

If you have a weak Biology background then you might want to consider purchasing a more thorough review source like Campbell Biology to use in addition to the AP review guides. This way when you encounter material that you cannot understand from the review guides alone you will have a more thorough source to look to for understanding.

Another study tool to use in conjunction with the Barron’s AP Biology review guide is the Barron’s AP Biology Flash Cards. They are a great study aid when used in tandem with the AP review guide and they are just as affordable. They are very detailed for flash cards and very succinct and to the point. The flash cards come in a set of 500 cards covering 20 general categories:

  • Biochemistry
  • The Cell
  • Cell Respiration
  • Photosynthesis
  • Cell Division
  • Heredity
  • Molecular Genetics
  • Classification
  • Evolution
  • Plants
  • Nutrition
  • Transport
  • Excretion
  • Hormones
  • Immunology
  • Nerves & Muscles
  • Reproduction & Development
  • Ecology
  • Animal Behavior
  • Lab

The flash cards come with a sorting ring enclosed to make it easier to carry and study-on-the-go. It is also easier to organize them to meet your study needs.

Campbell Biology Review

campbellRating
:

The Campbell Biology textbook is perhaps the book you used for your General Biology courses. It is a well-written and popular textbook for high school and college Biology courses. It is no secret either that this is the textbook which the questions for the Biology section of the DAT were derived from, making it a popular review source among pre-dental students.

 Overview

The book is long and thorough, after all it is a textbook covering all topics in Biology. Everything you need to know about Biology for the DAT is contained within the book. However, the book is way too long and detailed to spend the time reading and studying it from cover-to-cover. You would not be smart for doing that and would waste too much of your study time. You need to know what to study in it in order to be effective while studying Biology for the DAT.

I’ll help navigate you in the right direction so that you can effectively use this resource to prepare for the Biology section of the DAT. You should be familiar with the Biology topics covered on the DAT and only study those subjects in the Campbell textbook. Biology is such a broad field of study that there is plenty of material that does not apply to the DAT so be smart and only study what you need to know.

The textbook is available in multiple formats to meet your learning style. You can purchase it as a hardcover, paperback, or an Amazon Kindle Edition eTextbook. The book is expensive so renting it instead of purchasing is an option in order to save some money. As with all textbooks, publishers continuously revise them to release new editions with improved graphics and text revisions as necessary. There isn’t a huge difference between the most recent edition and some of the previous editions, but you will have the most current information and superior graphics by using the most recent edition.

The book does a great job of presenting information in a clear and understandable manner. It does well at connecting ideas together and explaining mechanisms and difficult concepts. Plenty of diagrams and graphics help explain the more complicated processes to help you more fully understand. The language in the textbook is clear and fairly easy to read. I don’t think any textbook is necessarily entertaining or fun to read, but this textbook is easier to read than most others. It can be beneficial to helping you understand Biology and to learn the concepts in a short amount of time.

The best way to use this book is in conjunction with a condensed review guide such as; CliffsNotes AP Biology or Barron’s AP Biology. Start your study with a review guide and as you come across topics that you do not understand well then resort to Campbell Biology for a more in-depth study of that topic. You could also read the chapter summaries in Campbell’s as well while studying through the review guide. After finishing a topic in the review guide take the quiz in the review guide, but also take the end of chapter quiz in the Campbell Biology textbook. If you score poorly on these quizzes then review that subject with the Campbell Biology textbook in order to properly learn the material. This way you will review all the necessary material for the DAT, but only spend additional time when it is needed on areas that you are weaker in which will make you much more efficient at studying and help you score higher on the DAT.

If you would like an alternative way of studying besides reading a textbook then try the Campbell Biology Slides. These slides were made in accordance with the 8th Edition of the textbook, but are still relevant and nearly identical to the most recent edition. You should use them in addition to the textbook to review Biology.

My Suggestion

The Campbell Biology textbook contains everything you need to know about Biology for the DAT, but it is overkill for your needs and that is why it is not recommended to read it from cover-to-cover. I suggest that you use it in conjunction with one of the AP Biology review guides for a thorough and effective study of Biology. If you have a limited knowledge of Biology then I would suggest this textbook for you. You will be well-prepared for the DAT Biology section with this textbook and by following my suggested method of studying with it you will be effective in your studies and score higher on the DAT. Make sure to do many DAT-formatted practice questions as well for the Biology section and don’t rely solely upon the chapter quizzes and practice questions within the AP review guides and the Campbell Biology textbook.

BenchPrep DAT Review

Rating:

With 6 years of steady growth, BenchPrep has become a big name in the test preparation industry. Their platform supports over 1,000,000 online learners and they have received strong approval ratings for their courses.

Fortunately for you, they have adopted a DAT prep course to supplement your studies with and get you ready for test day.

Pros

1. Easy to Use Interface

It only took minutes to learn how to navigate through the course materials. Everything from lessons, to flashcards, to practice games, and tests; it is all very organized.

2. Various Study Options

BenchPrep gives you the options to read through numerous DAT lessons, study over 800 flashcards by topic, play DAT games, and take a practice test. You even have the ability to create your own sets of flashcards and keep track of how well you have answered them.

3. Progress Tracking

The learning platform allows you to keep track of your confidence levels throughout each lesson. You can mark your confidence as either high, medium, or low; Doing so will help you filter out subjects you should come back to and review. You will be able to bookmark where you leave off and even take notes on each page.

4. Price

BenchPrep has made this course very affordable for our readers. The regular price for this course is $299, but by using the Crush the DAT Exam voucher code it is ONLY $75 for 12 months of course access. Simply enter the coupon code CRUSHO at checkout to claim your discount.

5. Competition

A little friendly competition can help keep things interesting, especially when it comes to studying. In the learning games section there is a leaderboard showing the top game scores of other students, this can help to motivate you and give you another outlet of studying.

6. Mobile Friendly

Not only can you study online from your desktop or laptop, all of the included materials are also made available through the BenchPrep App. The App can be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. Each students progress is saved and synced through their account login. This is great because you can pick up where you left off, on various devices.

7. Community Support

On each page, along with all of the bookmarking and confidence features, students have the capability of asking questions to the BenchPrep community and also to receive e-mail support.

Cons

1. No Video Lessons

Video lessons or lectures can be very helpful in explaining DAT concepts and solutions to practice problems. While some BenchPrep courses contain video, their DAT course does not. The lessons in this course will need to be read. That being said you would still receive a lot of content for 12 months and for only $75 dollars using the CRUSHO voucher code.

2. No Customized Study Plan

Some of their courses also offer a customized study plan for every day leading up to the test, but the DAT course does not. It would not be difficult; however, to plot the course yourself as the lessons are very well laid out and organized.

My Suggestion

BenchPrep is an affordable course for any student on-the-go and those who are looking for that extra boost in their preparation. It is a comprehensive review source that will help you get your feet wet in all the subject areas of the DAT. Make sure to use the flashcards and take the practice test for additional practice. It is an easy to use and helpful review course, but it isn’t a stand alone review course. Additional review materials and especially additional practice tests are necessary in order to be prepared for the DAT. For it’s price with the CRUSH discount I would consider using BenchPrep alongside some more in depth review courses like Kaplan or The Princeton Review.

Free DAT Practice Test

free dat exam practice testEveryone likes getting something for free, why not a free DAT practice test?! I have compiled some free practice tests together in one list that are available for anyone to take. They are offered by several different DAT prep companies as well as the American Dental Association – who writes and conducts the DAT.

Most of these free practice tests are shortened sample tests of an actual DAT, but serve as a good resource to use to give you an idea of what the DAT is like. These can be used as diagnostic exams that will provide you with a baseline set of scores that you can measure your progress against as you begin your studies and preparation for the DAT. Take one before you begin your studies so you can see your improvement throughout your studies to make sure that you are on your way to achieving your goals you’ve set for the DAT.

Since there are multiple free practice tests available you could take several or all of them throughout your studies. These are good practice tests to go over to give you an idea of the type and difficulty level of DAT questions as well as the format of the test. You will also be able to work on your time management which is a crucial part of being successful on the DAT.

List of Free DAT Practice Tests

1. This is a full-length practice test offered by the ADA (American Dental Association). The ADA conducts the DAT so there is no better source to get a free practice test from. The only downside to this practice test is that it is not computer-based like the actual DAT. You are still able to get a feel for what the DAT will be like and make sure to time yourself with a timer for each section to make it as realistic as possible. Click here to access the free full-length practice test!

2. The ADA has also released a free OAT practice test. You may be wondering why this has anything to do with the DAT, but the OAT (Optometry Admission Test) is very similar to the DAT except for it does not include the PAT section and it has an additional Physics section. Other then that the remaining sections of the test are identical as well as the format and types of questions asked.

Just skip the Physics Test on this practice test and you will still have a great practice test for the Survey of Natural Sciences, Reading Comprehension, and Quantitative Reasoning Tests. Don’t bother trying to score your test according to the OAT scoring system noted at the bottom of the practice test, but still check your answers according to the answer key provided. This test is also not computer based so pull out your timer to time yourself for this one as well. Click here to access the free practice test!

3. Kaplan offers a free DAT practice test to anyone without obligation to enroll in one of their review courses. You will be required to register for the event and sign up online, but you do not have to purchase anything. You can take this practice test online and get realistic experience taking a practice test with similar DAT testing software. They will also provide you with a score report that has a detailed breakdown of how you scored in each category and section of the DAT.

This is a great practice test to take, because you will be given an actual score report with scores ranging from 0-30 just like on the actual DAT. You can use these scores as a baseline to measure your progress throughout your studies. Learn more about what Kaplan has to offer and you’ll find the link to visit their site and sign up for a free practice test by clicking here!

4. The Princeton Review offers a free DAT practice test to anyone without obligation to enroll in one of their review courses.

Learn more about what The Princeton Review has to offer and you’ll find the link to visit their site and sign up for a free practice test by clicking here!

5. The DAT prep company Gold Standard offers a shortened free practice test for the DAT. It is ⅓ the length of the actual DAT, but still includes practice questions on all four tests of the DAT. They offer the test to anyone without obligation to purchase any of their review materials. You will be required to register for the event and sign up online. You can take this practice test online and get realistic experience taking a practice test with similar DAT testing software. They will also provide you with a score report that has a detailed breakdown of how you scored in each category and section of the DAT. You will also be given access to 1 hour of free instructional videos for the Survey of Natural Sciences test.

This is a great practice test to take, because you will be given an actual score report with scores ranging from 0-30 just like on the actual DAT. You can use these scores as a baseline to measure your progress throughout your studies. The only downside is that this test is shortened and not a complete representation of the actual DAT. Click here to access the free practice test!

There’s nothing better then getting something for free, but free usually means you are getting something of lesser quality otherwise why else would you get it for free?! That’s what you are getting with these free practice tests. They are great to have and I would recommend taking at least one or two of them if you’d like, but in my opinion these free tests do not replace the need to take full-length practice tests that are included in review courses such as Kaplan, The Princeton Review, or other DAT courses that you have to pay for.

You don’t get the same practice, experience, or results by taking these free tests as you do with taking a full-length test that you have to pay for. I suggest that you take at least one free practice test to serve as your diagnostic exam to begin your studies. Then as you are studying and preparing for the DAT, take other full-length practice tests that you have to pay for so you can more adequately prepare for the DAT.
