Gold Standard DAT Review

gold standard dat reviewRating: ★★★★

The Gold Standard company has been a big name in the MCAT industry for over a decade, but is a newcomer to the DAT prep industry. Although its new to the DAT game, its experience with the MCAT transfers over to the dental world.

Their Gold Standard DAT review course, which was released in 2013, uses a multimedia approach involving textbooks, videos, and MP3 formatted reviews to provide students with a comprehensive review of everything they need to know for the DAT. This course contains only what is necessary for the DAT, but it borrows and blends knowledge from the MCAT’s science sections.

What I like and appreciate the most about The Gold Standard review course is its simplicity in presentation and teaching. In all aspects of its review course, it is able to present the information in a simple and clear way to make understanding and learning easier.

Pros

1. Exam-Identical Software

The practice exams and simulations are presented in the same computerized format you will see on your test day, including the proper time limits, break policies, and rules for moving through the exam content. This familiarizes you with the Dental Admission Test format and helps build your confidence so you will crush it on your actual exam day.

2. Comprehensive Multimedia Resource

The Gold Standard book set, with 1408 pages of information, covers every topic that will be on the DAT. This book set will help you establish a solid foundation for every section of the Dental Admission Test as well as serve as a resource to look to for understanding. This is a great resource that will serve you well in your studies. The Gold Standard Natural Sciences Video Review, along with the MP3 files, help provide a complete multimedia review of the material for the DAT.

3. Practice Questions

With over 3,000 practice questions and 5 full-length practice tests, you will have plenty of problems to solve and become familiar with the format that you will see on the actual DAT. I like how they include several practice questions following every chapter in The Gold Standard book. That way, you can check your understanding after reviewing the material. They also include solutions to every practice question, which is crucial for learning and understanding.

4. Analysis Reports

Analysis Reports are generated for each practice test you take and help to identify your weakest areas and how to best adjust your preparation in order to improve your scores. They analyze each section of the test by question type and provide a comprehensive performance analysis.

5. Simplicity

What really impresses me about The Gold Standard is its ability to present and teach the information in a simple manner that makes it easier to understand and follow along. It offers thorough explanations about everything so that you are never left in the dark. It also has its review materials and course lined out in a simple manner that is easy to follow. In my opinion this is the hardest skill to master in education and The Gold Standard has done an exceedingly good job at stripping down difficult concepts and material and presenting it in a simple manner.

6. Strategies

There are effective test-taking strategies for several sections of the DAT in the DAT Complete 4-Book Set. It offers multiple strategies for the sections so that you can find a strategy that works for you.

7. Quality Materials

The textbooks are of a high quality and made with durable materials that will withstand the rigors of laborious studying over a long period of time. The textbooks also include quality full-color images and graphics. The print is large and easy to read which makes hours of studying easier on the eyes and body.

8. Free Mini DAT Practice Test

You can enroll online to take an online Mini DAT Practice Test for free. I’d recommend doing it before you have begun your studies so that you can see how well you do and identify what areas you will need to improve. Most likely, you will have to improve in every area, but you can at least take the free practice test as a diagnostic test to have a baseline that you can compare against.

The practice test is ⅓ the length of a full-length practice test, but offers real DAT simulation software, explanations, and instant DAT scores. No downloads are necessary and it is compatible with both PC and MAC. Forum threads through The Gold Standard website are accessible with the practice test to discuss solutions.

9. Variety of Learning Styles

With a variety of materials available in different forms of media, The Gold Standard makes it possible for any type of learner to receive instruction in the way that serves them best; whether that’s by reading textbooks, watching videos, or listening to audio files.

10. Accessibility

All of the material except the textbooks, DVDs, and flashcards are available online – the textbooks, DVDs, and flashcards will be mailed to you. The only software that is necessary to download is the TopScore Pro software. The online review material through The Gold Standard is easily accessible online which means that you can access the material anywhere that there is the Internet.

11. Customer Service

Gold Standard is timely and helpful with its customer service and does great job overall. The quality of customer service by a company is a reflection of the company and its product as a whole in my opinion. I’d be reassured that a quality company like this will give you a quality product that you can trust.

Cons

1. Not Cheap

The DAT Complete Package isn’t necessarily cheap, but at the same time isn’t as expensive as some of the other comprehensive review courses.

2. Supplemental Study Material May Be Needed

The Gold Standard can provide you with a solid foundation for the Dental Admission Test and has the potential to help you achieve 20+ scores on all sections of the DAT; however, if your practice scores are not as high as you would want, then supplemental materials and practice questions are always helpful and the extra materials could help make you more well-rounded and better prepared for the DAT.

3. Organic Chemistry

The Organic Chemistry section in The Gold Standard book could be better and does not include any practice questions. They were able to make up for the lack of material and practice questions in the book by providing online practice questions and additional material for a better review of this section.

My Suggestion

The Gold Standard offers a comprehensive and easy to follow review course. I admire their skill at presenting and teaching the information in an easy and simple way to make understanding and learning easier. They have revised some of their MCAT material for the DAT, but only include what is necessary for the DAT and have done a fairly good job at not including excess information that is unnecessary.

In order to have adequate comprehensive DAT review material at an affordable price I would suggest purchasing the DAT Complete 4-Book Set along with the additional TopScore Pro practice tests. If you prefer to have additional review videos then I would suggest either purchasing a one month subscription for unlimited access to their online videos.

I believe that any student would be adequately prepared for the DAT with this review course, but like any review course there are some weak areas. I would not think of the review material in this course for the Survey of Natural Sciences section as the ultimate resource in preparing for the actual DAT, but I still felt like it was a good resource to utilize. If you are not seeing as high of scores as you would like in this section then I would suggest additional studying from supplemental materials such as: Chad’s Videos for the Chemistry sections,  CliffsNotes for the Biology section, or J Co Review for all the sciences.

Crack The DAT Review

crack the dat RATING:

Crack the DAT has made their mark on the DAT prep industry with their top notch review material for the Perceptual Ability Test. Hundreds of pre-dental students have had enormous success while using this software for this section of the DAT.

Although Crack the DAT is best known for their PAT material, their course not limited to only that section and they do offer quality test prep material for the entire DAT.

Overview

Crack the DAT consists of testing software and limited review material to provide you with “your prescription for success” on the DAT. It emulates the same platform interface and actual testing conditions that you will experience on test-day. It will help familiarize you with the DAT as well as help you to estimate and predict what your DAT scores will be like.

Crack the DAT software can be downloaded on either a Windows or Mac computer. The software is available for instant download upon purchasing. There is no expiration date on the software and you have unlimited use of it! You are also provided with free updates to your software as newer versions are released. Periodically check for updates on your software to make sure that you have the most current version of the software.

The newest update to Crack the DAT enables the user to compare their answers to those of other Crack the DAT users and see where they stand among the rest. It also provides you with a breakdown of each question along with the distribution of all users for that question. This feature is only available on the Royal Flush Editions and the Ultimate DAT Bundle Package. There are a variety of editions and packages offered by Crack the DAT, so we will take a look at each section of the DAT and find out what is offered.

Pros

1. Exam-Identical Software

The practice exams and simulations are presented in the same computerized format you will see on your test day including the proper time limits, break policies, and rules for moving through the exam content. This familiarizes you with the Dental Admission Test format and helps build your confidence so you will crush it on your actual exam day.

2. Practice Questions

With literally thousands of practice questions and up to 10 full-length practice tests you will have plenty of problems for practice and to become familiar with the format that you will see on the actual DAT.

3. Analysis Report

For each test you take you will receive an analysis report which gives a breakdown in categories of all the questions. This comprehensive analysis will help you to analyze your strong and weak subject areas, show you how much time you spent on each question, how many times you changed your answer, and a myriad of other tools that will assess your overall testing strategy. There will also be video and written explanations for each answer. You have the capability to compile random questions from all tests into a new test to take and you can take all of the tests as many times as you’d like. This analysis report is a great resource to help you formulate a strategy for success on the DAT.

4. Explanations

The written and video explanations are well-done and extremely informative. These are great features to access after completing a practice test. You will learn a lot from them in order to increase your scores and excel on the DAT. Take advantage of them and you will see improvement in your scores.

5. Money Back Guarantee

Crack the DAT offers a 100% money back guarantee on all of their Royal Flush Editions and both of their DAT Bundle Packages. If you score a 14 or below on the sections that you have prepared with Crack the DAT, then you are entitled to get your money back. Send in your Exam Score Report and proof that you have taken all of the practice tests and they will credit you back the amount that you have invested for that section. You can even keep the software.

6. Free Trial

You can download the software on either your Windows or Mac computer for free in order to take a shortened DAT practice test. I’d recommend doing it before you make your purchase in order to see what Crack the DAT is like and if you think it will benefit you. The free demo contains the identical exam simulation software and you will receive an analysis report upon completion of the test with your scores.

7. Customer Service

They have very good customer service and are attentive to your needs. They have the option to receive live chat support on their website. The quality of customer service by a company is a reflection of the company and its product as a whole in my opinion.

Cons

1. Price

These materials are some of the more expensive DAT review materials on the market today.

2. Supplemental Study Material Suggested

These practice tests and additional features available with Crack the DAT are exceptional resources to use while preparing for the DAT; however, I feel that supplemental materials are still necessary, especially for the Sciences section of the DAT. Practice tests and explanations of the answers cannot fully prepare you for this section. I’d recommend a good resource like Chad’s Videos, Kaplan, The Princeton Review, or choose from others to prepare for the Sciences. Once you have studied from these materials and have a foundation in them you should use Crack DAT SCIENCES to test your knowledge.

3. Accessibility

The software can be downloaded and used without internet connection, however, in order to view the video explanations of the answers and update your software an internet connection is necessary. Also, the software can only be used for 2-3 weeks off-line before it is required to connect to the internet in order to renew another 2-3 weeks of off-line usage. Therefore, it is better to always have an internet connection available while using the software.

My Suggestion

Crack the DAT is an exceptional resource and if you can afford to drop some money on it then it is worth the cost. It has high quality practice tests that will give you the most realistic experience in order to adequately prepare for the DAT. It is loaded with additional features to teach and help explain difficult concepts.

Crack the DAT has a great track record and thousands of pre-dental students have had greater success on the DAT because of it. Generally, students have scored within 1 point of their Crack DAT PAT test compared to the actual PAT test and 1-2 points higher on the Crack DAT READING and Crack DAT SCIENCE tests compared to the actual tests. The questions are slightly more rigorous than the actual DAT and students tend to score 1-2 points higher on the actual DAT than they do on the Crack the DAT tests.

If money isn’t an issue then I would purchase one of the Ultimate DAT Bundle Packages from Crack the DAT along with some supplemental materials for the Sciences. If money is an issue then I would purchase just Crack DAT PAT along with a more comprehensive resource. I’d even consider purchasing the Crack DAT MATH and Crack DAT READING editions as well.

Additional Information

Your previous purchase of the Crack DAT PAT Ace Edition is credited towards the Bundle Package that you upgraded to.

Timing on Tests: You are able to change the time allotted to you on the tests from their normal times that they would be on the actual DAT. This could be helpful in order to work on increasing your speed for certain sections to make sure that you will be able to finish all of the questions on a section before the time runs out.

Canadian DAT PAT: The Royal Flush Edition and the Ultimate Package both offer review materials for the Canadian DAT PAT. They contain an overview of the Canadian PAT as well as tutorials on soap carving.

If you purchased a Bundle Package then make sure to enter your license key into the “Bundle Package” box.

Crack DAT PAT

The granddaddy of them all, the biggest and best that Crack the DAT has to offer. There are three different editions available to help prepare you for the PAT. There are 3D interactive models and explanations with each edition. The 3D models will allow you to rotate and manipulate the objects to help you better understand how to tackle complex PAT problems. These are some of the best tools I’ve seen in a review source and are very helpful for understanding the subtests of the PAT.

There are also several sections that you can get additional practice in such as angle ranking, hole punching, and cube counting. There is a practice mode and a competition mode. The competition mode is only available in the Royal Flush Edition or as part of the Ultimate DAT Bundle Package; It allows you to compete against fellow users and if you score high enough then you’ll get your name on the leaderboard. The analysis report that you’ll receive after completing practice tests will notify you of concepts in which you are strong or weak in and provide you with statistical data that will help you in formulating a strategy to improve your PAT score.

Here’s an overview of what is available with each edition for Crack DAT PAT:

Crack DAT MATH

Crack DAT MATH has plenty of practice exams for the Quantitative Reasoning section of the DAT in order to get you prepared and comfortable for the real thing. These are very similar in difficulty and are great exams to use. There are also helpful video explanations in addition to written explanations with each edition that are conducted by a tutor on a whiteboard. There are only two editions available for Crack DAT MATH.

    • Score Guarantee

Crack DAT SCIENCE

Crack DAT SCIENCE is in my opinion the weakest area of the Crack the DAT materials for the DAT, but it is still an exceptional resource to use. This is one area; however, that requires much more studying and knowledge, so I would recommend additional resources for this section. Once you have established a solid foundation in the sciences I would use these practice exams and video explanations to test your knowledge and identify areas to improve upon. There are two editions available for Crack DAT SCIENCE.

  1. Ace Edition:
    • 5 DAT Science Exams
    • 500 Questions
    • 15 Hours of Video
  2. Royal Flush Edition:
    • 20 DAT Science Exams
    • 2000 Questions
    • 40 Hours of Video
    • Videos in Full Screen
    • Compare your Scores to Peers
    • Priority Support
    • Score Guarantee
    • Free Updates to New Versions

Crack DAT READING

This is a great resource to use as it is one section that doesn’t require any prior knowledge; only effective test taking strategies and plenty of practice, which is exactly what Crack DAT READING can give you. There are also two editions available for this test.

  1. Ace Edition:
    • Simulate 5 Reading DAT Exams
    • 15 Reading Comprehension Passages
    • 250 Questions w/ Detailed Explanations

TopScore Pro

TopScore DATOverall Rating:

TopScore Pro has been around since 1998 and they have done a good job at continually updating and improving their software over the years. They have one of the most popular test simulation software products on the market today.

TopScore Pro is a good product to use once you have been studying and are ready for some full length practice tests. The test simulation software is not meant to take the place of an actual review course like Kaplan, The Princeton Review, or Chad’s Videos. It is merely practice tests to give you actual experience in taking a test that is similar in format and difficulty to the actual DAT. It also helps you to gauge where you are at in your preparation and understanding of the material as well as to give you a relative idea about how you would score on the actual Dental Admission Test.

Overview

When purchasing Top Score Pro you get three full length practice tests, score reports and solutions to problems. They also offer a study guide for the DAT that goes for $10.

However, the study guide is more of an outline of what you should know for the DAT and not an actual study guide. The test software is very similar to the actual DAT and is great to use for that purpose so that you will already be familiar with the style and format of the actual DAT before test day.

As far as how the practice tests are in relation to the actual DAT; here are my thoughts for each of the four different testing areas.

Survey of the Natural Sciences

  • This test is about similar to or slightly harder than the actual DAT.

  • I believe you will score very similar or even slightly higher on the actual DAT compared to your scores from these practice tests.

  • The practice tests typically do a good job at portraying what areas of Biology are the more common areas to be tested on for the actual DAT, but it is difficult to prepare for the Biology section as the information is so vast due to the many fields of Biology and the much wider pool of information that these questions are derived from.

  • Don’t think that if you see a pattern of similar Biology questions in a practice test that your actual DAT will be the same way. Expect to have a lot of variation and a wide array of questions on the Biology section. It is the hardest section of the DAT to be fully prepared for, because there is too much information to know everything.

The Perceptual Ability Test

  • The TopScore Pro PAT is slightly easier in my opinion than the actual PAT.

  • I found there to be some repetitive questions throughout the three TopScore Pro Perceptual Ability Tests.

  • I personally like Crack the DAT PAT best for the PAT and would recommend it for your PAT preparation.

The Reading Comprehension Test

  • This test is fairly similar, but slightly easier than the actual Reading Comprehension Test on the DAT.

  • I believe it’s easier, because the questions on this practice test are nearly all direct questions about the text. These are questions that all you have to do is look back through the text and find the answer.

  • The actual DAT on the other hand is not made up of just these types of questions. There are more variations in the types of questions with more questions asking more about the tone or feeling of a passage than anything else. There are also questions that ask about which sentence or thought could end or complete a passage.

The Quantitative Reasoning Test

  • This test is similar, but I felt it was slightly easier than the actual DAT.

  • It is still a good representation of the actual DAT and I think you will find your scores to be fairly similar on the actual DAT compared to your scores on the practice tests.

  • You can also try other practice tests besides TopScore Pro that are similar as well to the actual Quantitative Reasoning Test such as Kaplan or The Princeton Review.

Additional Information

Upon completing each of the three full length practice tests on TopScore Pro you will be given a score report. This report is scored similar to the actual DAT in order to give you an accurate representation of what the DAT will be like and relatively what your scores will be like.

You are also provided with solutions to the problems so you can learn why you got questions incorrect. These are helpful to have in order to learn from your errors. It seems like the solutions are just copied and pasted out of resources to explain the basic concepts for the answer and at times may seem unclear why something is right or wrong. They are still helpful, however, in gaining some information from the practice tests.

The test software is very similar to the actual DAT and is a good representation of it. You will be more comfortable with the actual DAT by taking these practice tests, because you will be familiar with the timing, structure and format of the test beforehand. The software is available for Windows or Mac.

TopScore Pro has been continually updated since its creation in 1998 and the questions are written by college professors and DAT test experts. They are reviewed by current dental students and dentists, and others specifically familiar with national testing boards – like the DAT. They offer an error free guarantee which essentially means that there are very few if any errors in the practice tests. They will pay you $10 per error that you find and submit along with your reasoning for it being wrong and the correct solution. It could help put a few dollars in your pocket if you can find any!

TopScore Pro is very affordable and offered at a reasonable price which is why it is probably the most popular test software on the market. Once purchased, you will have access to the software for 7 months!

Hopefully you never need to contact TopScore Pro, because they have poor customer service. I have tried to contact them via telephone and email multiple times over a long period of time and have only received support one time. I leave messages and send emails yet they never return phone calls or email me back. If you need to contact them then hopefully you get lucky and can reach them!

My Suggestion

Remember that TopScore Pro is testing software only. Don’t get it and think that this is all you need to prepare for the DAT. You need review sources such as: Kaplan, The Princeton Review, or Chad’s Videos to study from first. After establishing a solid foundation of knowledge you could then use their testing software to test your knowledge and track your progress.

CliffsNotes AP Biology 3rd Edition Review

Rating:

CliffsNotes is a series of study guides for students preparing for the AP Biology exam. The information is presented in pamphlet form in a clear and concise manner. These study guides are not meant to replace thorough review sources such as, textbooks or manuals. They serve as quick reference guides for reviewing material.

Many students in preparing for the Biology section of the DAT choose to study with CliffsNotes AP Biology. It is recommended to use the Third Edition when using this study guide as it is more relevant to the information covered on the DAT. The more recent Fourth Edition has been updated and is tailored more towards the updated AP Biology Exam. This edition has left out some of the information from the Third Edition needed for the DAT as well as it has added additional information for the updated AP Biology Exam that is not relevant to the DAT.

Overview

This is a review book for the AP Biology Exam, therefore not all the information in it is pertinent to the DAT. I will go through each part of the book and explain what information is covered.

Introduction

The introduction will cover a review of the AP exam format and scoring which can be skipped. There are some test-taking strategies for multiple choice questions which may be helpful for the DAT. There are also hints for the essay questions of the AP exam which are not necessary to know. Lastly, it contains 14 principles of Biology which are good to know.

Part I: Subject Area Reviews

This section covers 14 subject areas of Biology and includes practice questions and answers at the conclusion of each subject. There are outlines for each subject that offer a clear overview of the subject. The important terms and concepts will be bolded throughout each subject which makes it easier to spot them and know which items are important to know. It is written in a straightforward, easy to read format that is clear and concise.

There are images and diagrams throughout the book to illustrate concepts. However, I found several of these images and diagrams to be lacking in detail. They could have been more useful if they were more detailed. There are also several concepts that did not have any images or diagrams with them and in my opinion these concepts would have been easier to comprehend by including an illustration.

The questions at the end of each subject will be multiple choice and essay questions. It is up to you whether or not you want to do the essay questions since the DAT only consists of multiple choice questions, but these might be beneficial to you as they will test your understanding of Biology concepts by making you process the information that you studied and explain it in answer format.

Part II: Laboratory Review

This section contains a review of all 12 AP laboratory exercises. These laboratory reviews will cover some concepts that may be on the DAT, but the DAT isn’t concerned with doing laboratory experiments so this section isn’t very useful for your studies. Your studies should focus on the Subject Area Reviews of the book.

Part III: AP Biology Practice Tests

The last section of the book contains two full-length practice tests that simulate the actual AP exam. There are also answers and explanations for all of the questions. These practice questions can be helpful in order to test your understanding of the material, however, it is more beneficial to do practice questions that have been formatted in the manner that the DAT will present them. Any specific DAT review material would have questions like this.

My Suggestion

Cliffs Notes AP Biology is a great review guide to help you prepare for the Biology section of the DAT. It is cheap, affordable, but also well-written so I would suggest it as a material to use for studying Biology.

It is very succinct and to the point, it reads like an encyclopedia. It contains all you need to know to prepare for the DAT. It is not as easy to read as Barron’s AP Biology, nor does it have as much content and illustrations, but it is a slightly better review guide in preparing you for the DAT.

Most students prefer CliffsNotes over Barron’s AP Biology if you have to pick between the two, as do I. But I would suggest using both review guides for your Biology study. I would study mainly from CliffsNotes, but would also do all of the practice tests and questions in Barron’s as well along the way and look to Barron’s when you need additional clarification with something. Also, you should use Barron’s for the Plants and Taxonomy sections instead of CliffsNotes as these sections are better explained in Barron’s. That way you will fill in all the gaps of information that you need to know for the DAT Biology section. They are both affordable review guides to purchase and both complement each other to adequately prepare you for the test.

If you have a weak Biology background then you might want to consider purchasing a more thorough review source like Campbell Biology to use in addition to the AP review guides. This way when you encounter material that you cannot understand from the review guides alone you will have a more thorough source to look to for understanding.

Another study tool to use in conjunction with the CliffsNotes AP Biology review guide is the CliffsNotes AP Biology Flashcards. They are a great study aid when used in tandem with the AP review guide. There are 950 print flash cards with a question/term on the front and the answer on the back of each card. They are divided into topics with each topic identified at the head of the card. There’s an additional 50 blank flash cards if you would like to create some of your own.

Flash cards provide students with a different style of learning which some prefer. It also would be helpful to use them for reviewing concepts and testing your understanding of Biology. Like the book, these flash cards are cheap and affordable.

Barron’s DAT Review

Barron's DAT BookRating:

The Barron’s Dental Admission Test book was written by several dentists and was first released back in 1999. After its release it became one of the more popular review books for the DAT. Many students found it helpful in explaining key concepts and it received much praise for its PAT review material.

Over time, however, as other DAT review materials have been released that are superior resources to Barron’s the popularity of Barron’s has dwindled. Although some still find it useful and appealing as a review material for the DAT.

Overview

Barron’s DAT is a comprehensive review source made up of a 512 page textbook and a CD-ROM. The textbook offers test-taking advice, descriptions of dental education and the practice of dentistry, reviews of all the DAT topics, and two full-length practice tests along with answers and explanations. The CD-ROM includes two additional full-length practice tests along with automatic scoring and explanations that simulate the actual DAT.

Here is a more detailed outline of what the textbook contains:

  • Acknowledgments
  • Chapter 1 Introduction
  • About the DAT
  • Scoring
  • A Note to Canadian Students
  • The Art of Test Taking
  • Chapter 2 Dental Education and Practice
  • The Application Process
  • Dental School
  • The Profession of Dentistry
  • Chapter 3 Survey of the Natural Sciences Review
  • Biology
  • General Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Chapter 4 Perceptual Ability Test Review
  • Chapter 5 Reading Comprehension Test Review
  • Chapter 6 Quantitative Reasoning Test Review
  • Chapter 7 Model Examination A
  • Chapter 8 Model Examination B
  • Appendix
  • Acronyms
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Periodic Table of the Elements
  • List of Elements with Their Symbols
  • Reference Tables for Chemistry

Additional Information

When first released this book was very popular among pre-dental students and it was commonly used along with the Kaplan review book in preparing for the DAT. It covers every section of the test and offers more test-taking strategies as well as explanations of concepts than the Kaplan review book did. It was organized better and more user friendly than Kaplan’s review book. It was also used quite commonly for its PAT review material which was more thorough and helpful than most other review materials at the time.

Now, however, this book is not used as much due to other superior resources available today. There are multiple reasons why this book is not used as much and is not highly recommended.

The book is littered with errors, grammatical and informational, throughout all of the practice tests. There are blatantly obvious errors and others that might not be as obvious. It almost appears as if the publishers didn’t even bother to proofread and edit the book; even the second edition, the most recent edition, is filled with errors. It will leave many students scratching their heads wondering if they are wrong or if it’s the book. This book would be extremely stressful and confusing to use if you were not using any additional review materials with it in order to recognize the errors and not be mislead.

The practice tests included in the textbook and CD-ROM, without considering the errors, are slightly easier in every section than the actual DAT. They can be helpful, because they will provide you with additional practice which is always beneficial. But there are better and more representative materials out there to use.

My Suggestion

Barron’s DAT book and CD-ROM can be helpful in explaining key concepts and providing you with helpful test-taking strategies for the DAT. It does a good job of providing a straight-forward overview of the main ideas of each topic; more like a quick reference guide than an in-depth review book. There are some good tips for the PAT that can be helpful in scoring higher on this section, but nothing monumental that you cannot learn in other review materials.

Although it is extremely cheap and affordable, I cannot highly recommend this review source due to the numerous errors within it that will cause much unwanted stress and confusion. If you decide to use it in preparing for the DAT then I would use it as a supplemental review source and would not rely solely upon it. Use it to review concepts and if you choose to get additional practice from it then beware of the errors that you will encounter.
